David is wandering down a dirt path, hands in his suit pockets. Behind him, a taxi drives off. He looks annoyed.
Nero sighs. Again.
David digs through his pockets, and checks through multiple wallets, scowl growing as he walks along. He tosses a library card out of one. "Well, this is no good."
Nero is watching the cars pass across the road. He's in a tree where he can see beyond the gate.
David: If I'm going to find my way out here, I'm going to need money.
David: And I should probably stop talking to myself.
Nero spots an unfamiliar man.
David sighs, and ruffles his hair, looking up and spotting a large wooden gate.
David: Hello, what's this?
Nero peeks over, watching.
David raises a hand to his chin, and then raises a hand to his hair.
Nero 's eyes can easily be seen in the trees. He's still too new to even know they glow quiet yet.
David ruffles his hair, loosens his tie, and pulls up his sleeves. He looks a bit more sympathetic now. He knocks.
Nero watches the strange man knock on the gate.
Nero: ...
Nero: What are you doing?
David: Hello?
Nero: Up here.
David quirks an eyebrow and looks around. "Knocking, if it's anything to you, tree."
David: Oh, hello strange child.
Nero cackles squeakily. "I'm not a tree!"
Nero: Hello.
Nero: What are you doing?
David: Would you help a poor lost man and open up this lovely gate, here? I require food, and water.
Nero cocks his head to the side.
Nero: Food... food like perhaps...oh, of course.
Nero hops out of the tree and walks up to the gate.
Nero is whistling songs from the Little Mermaid.
David grins a bit nervously. 'Well, this is working well'
Nero scratches at the gate.
Nero: Hmmm...
David: ...
Nero puts his mouth on the lock and tries to bite it.
Nero: No, that won't do.
David: Perhaps you could unlock it, somehow?
Nero twists it and finally gets it open.
David is a bit weirded out.
David: Ah, lovely.
Nero: There. I did it (:
Nero: I did good.
David: You did.
David: Say, would you like to do more good?
Nero grins.
Nero: Why, yes. Yes, I would.
David: Perhaps you could net me some camp edibles?
Nero: I will. What sort is your favorite? I like apples.
Nero: I like all kinds of apples.
Nero: I like them so much that...
Nero: I learned the internet thingy... to find out about them.
David: That's... nice. I like all sorts of food, really. Just... something.
Nero: Okay!
Nero heads off into the blackness of night towards the main cabin.
Nero returns. With apples.
David is pleased.
Nero: I brought food
David: Thank you, kind...
David: Say, what is your name?
Nero: Nero. Nero Delvari.
Nero looks proud as he says this.
David: I see. It is very nice to meet you, Nero.
Nero: What is your name?
David: Simon Fisher.
David: Very nice to meet you!
David: ...I said that twice. I apologize, I've just been so long without food.
Nero: Simon is a nice name. But why is it that your last name is about fish? Does that mean you like fish?
David has been three hours without food.
Nero: It's okay. I think it's nice that you said 'very nice to meet you' twice.
David: No, I believe it means my ancestors fished.
Nero: What are ancestors?
David: Relatives?
Nero: Is that a sort of body part because I can imagine---oh.
Nero: I see.
Nero grabs one of the apples himself.
David: So.
David takes a bite of an apple.
Nero points. "That's a fuji."
Nero: Mine is a Granny Smith.
David: I see.
David doesn't really care either way, and wonders what else he can do with this child.
David: ...Say.
David takes out a wallet. "Have you seen this kind of thing before?"
Nero peers at it. "No, I can't say I have."
David: Really now? Not on any of the adults at this place?
Nero: Nope.
David: Oh, that's a darn shame.
Nero: Why?
Nero: Tell me about it.
David: Because, you see, I collect these things. I help people, because these things- Yanzers, they call it- Become far too heavy.
David: And so I empty them out for others.
Nero: I think Miss Evan has stuff in her pockets.
David: It's too bad there was no one here I could help, because I would reward you for being my helper.
David: Really, now?
Nero: You would? What's a reward?
David: A gift for a good job. Like these apples, or perhaps I will gift you with a few special yanzers I have collected.
Nero likes the sound of this. "I would like a gift."
Nero 's mouth creases into a small smile.
David: You would?
David smiles back. "Then perhaps you could retrieve Miss Evan's yanzer for me? She would appreciate it."
David: Just do not wake her.
Nero: I could do that! Miss Evan doesn't like me much, so perhaps she would like me more.
Nero: I'll be right back.
David: You see, my job requires that I must not bother others. My work is a secret work.
David: Okay, just be careful!
Nero takes off hastily but silently.
David ducks back into the shadows.
Nero is gone for approximately 15 minutes before returning.
Nero approaches David.
David pokes his head out from the shadows. "Did you do well?"
Nero: This is a yanzer?
Nero shows him.
David takes the wallet. "Why yes, it is! Excellent work!"
Nero smiles this time even bigger.
ves the credit cards, and then tosses Nero a wallet, and then an apple.
David takes her money, but leaves the credit cards, and then tosses Nero a wallet, and then an apple.
David: As am I, Nero. As am I.
Nero chomps down on the apple.
David hands him back the wallet. "Now, Nero. Promise me you won't tell anyone about me? Even if they get mad?"
David: Because sometimes people are a little mad when they don't catch me, because they are in competition to catch me.
David waves his hand. "It's part of my job."
Nero: You are a nice man, Simon. I'm not sure I understand you fully, but I know that you are nice.
David: Thank you, Nero. You are a very smart young man.
David: In fact, you were so good that you can have these.
Nero grins happily and proudly.
Nero: What?
Nero: Have what? o:
David hands over the rest of the stolen wallets.
David: Now, I must depart.
Nero:
Nero grins a huge sharptoothed grin.
David pats Nero on the head. "You've helped me in more ways than you can imagine, kid."
Nero: Thank you! I will treasure the---wait, you're going?
David: Yes, I fear I must help others. You should stay here, though
Nero: I can't go anywhere. Merric wouldn't want me to.
Nero: So I will stay here regardless.
David: Protect the camp, and my precious yanzers.
Nero: Yanzers. Right.
David: I see. Well then, be a good boy.
David: See you!
David leaves, shutting the gate behind him.
Nero grins happily, waving.
David munches on an apple as he walks down the dirt road, bills in hand.
David: I love my job.
