When an animal sensed danger, they had a tendency to leap into action the moment the sensation hit their veins. It was a certain fight instinct that drove them to do things without really thinking such as risk their own life and limb. Even worse, this instinct seemed to increase the moment one’s children were at the risk of threat. Perhaps this was what drove Marie to act out in the way she did. She hadn’t strayed far, just enough to retrieve the ball that had been telekinetically thrown by one of her little bundles of joy, but she had seen Donny almost instantly as a trigger hit her mind and made her freeze. Though she hadn’t quite recognized him at first, the immediate thing that entered her mind was that he had to be removed. So, the instant she caught sight of him, Marie was upon him like a wildcat on a lone deer.
Her foot was the first to impact upon him and sent him crashing to the ground and then she proceeded to keep him locked beneath her; a harsh look upon her face. His arms became pinned, her foot poised in the center of his back to keep him back, and she observed him through careful, emerald eyes. The boys upon the blanket only laughed at the whole ordeal. They couldn’t have cared less who he was or what he had been planning to do, when their mother came in as their dark haired hero, it was always worth the wait. They giggled and Marie smiled, but it quickly faded and she brought her stare back to Donny. “Alright big shot, just what do you think you were doing, hanging around my kids…’ she stated in an accusing tone. At Whispering Rock, there were very few people you could trust.

If one had been listening close enough, they might have heard a low growl as if the woman perched atop him were truly the lioness of a mother she appeared to be. She hardly seemed to care that he was truly innocent. She had no proof he had been intending to harm the two giggling infants, but in her mind, she had prevented it should it have ever come to blossom in his shifty little thoughts. However, that did not mean she had the right to keep him pinned to the ground like an Australian wrestling a crocodile. Releasing his arms with an obvious amount of discontent at having to let him up, Marie stood and flipped her long black hair in a curt manner and crossed her arms. Since the day she’d found him snooping about the Parking Lot with that other woman, she’d never truly had a reason to trust him. Not psychic, not technically a staff member, he was a trespasser and he had stepped a bit to far onto her turf for her liking. This resulted in one thing and one thing only.
“Knowing you, you’ll probably give them some air born disease.” Utter and bitter loathing. Maybe it was the way he spoke or maybe the way he went around like he owned the place, but Marie could see no good in him. He had yet to prove he would do anything that didn’t involve hurting her family. As the two boys laughed, however, she felt her heart and spirits lift a bit. There was no keeping anger when they were around with their big eyes and soft smiles. Marie knelt down to the left of Nathaniel and he caught her shirt in his little grip; babbling incoherently as if telling her the most exciting tale one could ever hope to hear. She looked back at Donny, the anger still flickering in her eyes, but diminished in size. “Besides, most people don’t just walk up to a woman’s kids and expect a warm greeting when they’re practically a stranger…”

At first, she looked at him with some degree of indifference in her eyes, the thoughts moving in and out of view of the shifting green tides playing about her pupils. She wasn’t sure what it was about Donny that put her so on edge. Sure, there were the little things, but as for a true grudge or reason, she had nothing to offer to explain herself. The general aura he gave off simply made her uncomfortable. It was as though there was something about him that she knew, but it was something distant and something she just couldn’t seem to put her finger on it. Perhaps that was it. Perhaps it was the fact that she didn’t know why she felt the way she did. Living with someone who was generally unpredictable never seemed like it would have a good outcome. Still, she didn’t say this. Marie stared at him with her brow furrowed slightly and eyes narrowed like she were trying to find an answer somewhere in his expression. As she opened her mouth to speak at last, however, she was interrupted by the most heartbreaking cry she could ever hear. Nathaniel had a habit of sobbing whenever his mother felt tense or angry and Marie instantly felt the guilt that came with his sorrow.
She was at his side in seconds, lifting the infant from the blanket and cradling him close to her chest. For a moment, she didn’t seem to remember that Donny was even there, distracted by her need to coo softly to the boy and make him go quiet again. “Shhh…It’s ok angel.” Marie glanced back at Donny as the dark haired child hiccupped and whimpered against her and her expression seemed to soften a bit. She still didn’t know what to say in specific to his question, but as she sighed quietly, she spoke. “I’m sorry….”

“You afraid of what a bunch of kids will think of you?” The question held a bit of a mocking tone, just enough to make the smile lightly curving her lips legitimate. Marie couldn‘t really help herself. Her own personality made her constantly wary and constantly caustic. In the long run, it was a good thing for the way it made her sons smile and stopped Nathaniel‘s pitiful whimpers, but at the same time, it always got her into some form of trouble. Had Marie grown up in a more normal environment, she might have learned the common courtesy to think before she spoke, but for now, she could only be who she was and that was untrusting and challenging. She looked up at Donny and gave him an expression a little bit more friendly than her usual smirk and her son laughed in that innocent and heart lifting manner.
She gave a slight sigh and set him back on the blanket with his brother; the two of them instantly becoming more cheerful at the presence of their siblings. “It‘s not you that I dislike.” Marie didn‘t look at Donny as she spoke. She kept her gaze trained on the twins as they pulled themselves across the blanket and observed the world around them with infantile curiosity. “I just haven‘t been given a reason to think anything else of you.” [/size]

She shrugged, shoulders moving strands of long black hair along her back, and then gave a smile. There was a certain amusing sense about the situation. In her mind, she didn’t at all dislike Donny. He was a lot like her. Donny was caustic, blunt, and despite his somewhat shifty nature, not at all a bad guy, but she refused to tell him that. When someone in her life wanted praise or attention, they had to earn it and he seemed to be working for it almost subconsciously. Like Marie, he seemed to have the same unique need to know every detail of why things were and she was neglecting to tell him what he wanted to know. It was like a game to her. Marie was the cat who batted the mouse back and forth for her own amusement and she had yet to decide if she wanted to get rid of it or not. She could keep this up for ages without getting tired in the least, but she wasn’t that cruel. Not even a Grestofski was cruel enough to keep this up that long.
Instead, she pushed herself back a bit to make room on her blanket and lightly pat the surface; motioning for him to join her. “Don’t worry, big guy. Unlike you, I’m a staff member and these kids wouldn’t dare cross me. I organize their exercises, after all.” Marie gave a slight chuckle, remembering the time she’d threatened to hang them from a wire and make them do telekinetic pull-ups. The twins smiled and sat with their mother to the best of their abilities; Nathaniel placing his head in her lap and Damitri leaning on her arm. “And I promise you, neither of this little studs will get you in any trouble. As for how I treat people, it varies. Depends on how I feel at the time.”
